Fishing spoons are quite possibly my favorite all time lures to use in almost any angling situation. If you’re a fisherman and you aren’t using spoons you’re missing out on one of the most powerful lures that should be in your tackle box. Ask any experienced angler and they’ll tell you that fishing with spoons is a viable option in any season or set of conditions and for almost any species of game fish.
The reason spoons work so well in such diverse conditions is that there are so many different types and designs to choose from. Larger spoons are available for larger saltwater species and smaller spoons for freshwater fish. There are four main types of spoons available. You may hear other kinds mentioned but they are simply a variation of one of these main families of spoons. They are, in no particular order; spinners, spoons, plugs and jigs.

The general characteristic that ties them all together is that they all have the same basic design. Spoons are usually made of metal or some other highly reflective material. They are generally oblong in shape. The line connects at one end and the hook(s) are found at the other. Now you can see where the name “spoon” comes from, these lures look like the business end of a piece of silverware.
