If you’ve read any of my other blog posts you know I love to use spoons of all shapes and sizes when I go fishing. One thing I haven’t discussed is making your own spoons yet.
Making spoons is fun if you like this type of project, and its pretty easy to make a lure that will catch fish. A couple downsides are that the process can take some time, and if you are trying to save money by making spoons yourself you would probably be better off buying them directly from a store.
To make a simple fishing spoons start by buying a sheet of metal. I like to use copper but you can mix it up if you have access to a different material. Next you will need to cut out the spoon body. I make spoons that are between 2-3″ long and about 1/2″ wide, but you can vary this based on your needs. After the body has been cut out you will need to file the edges smooth and drill holes at either end. You will also need to pound the spoon into a concave shape to give it action in the water. Make sure you don’t make this too deep or it won’t act right.

If you want the spoon to have a different color than copper or be really shiny you will need to have it chromed or treated with a similar finish. I usually just buff and polish the copper and that gives me great results. After the spoon is finished I always attach a hook with a split ring and I’m done and ready to fish.
As you can see this is a fun, but time consuming process and if you aren’t the handy type its usually easier to just buy a set of spoons like the one below:

I’ve tried making my own fishing spoons before and as you say it really isn’t easy. One thing I would add is that you need to make sure to polish to holes you drill in the spoon. I lost one that took me an hour to make immediately when it cut the line I had tied to it on casting.
