pig and jig image1The pig and jig gets its name because big bass love pork baits. Pork lures look just their plastic counterparts, and come in shapes like crawfish, frogs or worms.  These lures are made from actual pork skin. In order to stay fresh, pork baits are stored in a brine (saltwater) so they don’t rot.

The classic pig and jig lure is a jig with a skirt and a pork trailer, basically an additional  hook, connected to the main hook. For fishermen who don’t like the mess from using real pork lures, there are many substitutes like plastic worms or plastic crawfish complete with tails.

The pig and jig can be a heavy lure that is great for casting near any structure like stumps or tree branches that are underwater, and then move, twitch and sink slowly to bring the fish in.  Because these lures are big and easy to see it makes them one of the best lures in cold water, when fish are also moving slow.
