Fishing Spoons

...Tips on our favorite type of tackle

Types of Spoons

Fishing spoons are one of the most powerful pieces of equipment in your fishing kit.  Everybody who has tried spoons knows that they’re flexible and perform in different seasons and almost any condition for just about all species of game fish.  If you haven’t tried spoons you are not taking advantage of probably the most successful long-established strategies for fishing.

There are 4 primary styles of spoons to try; spoons, plugs, spinners and jigs.  Each one is perfect for a specific method of angling and when you understand how to fit the proper kind of spoon to the fishing circumstances you’ll find that catching fish just became a whole lot easier.

A spinner is a smaller lure that is usually casted (but sometimes it can be trolled).  Most spinners have a main body like many casting lures and then will have a small, shiny element that can move freely.  The main idea behind a spinner is to imitate a injured bait fish swimming by bumping into objects or moving in a jerky manner.  The flashing spinner can be seen easily under water and will attract game fish in the area.

Fishing Spoons are generally larger than spinners

and are usually one solid piece of brightly polished metal.   Spoons are often used for larger species of fish but there are many popular bass spoons available.  A spoon is shaped like the popular eating utensil and the hook is located at the bottom and the line at the top.

Plugs are a popular type of fishing lure that is used when trolling.  The idea behind a plug is that it will be trolled behind a boat and will sink to a predetermined depth that fish are thought to be at.  The plug accomplishes this by having a small bill in the front that forces it down as it moves through the water.  Plugs are used effectively in both fresh and salt water.

Jigs are the most simple type of spoon lure.  They are shiny metallic lures, and often very narrow in shape. Jigs come in all shapes and sizes, some saltwater jigs weigh up to 10 lbs.  Jigs are usually lowered into the water and moved up and down in a “jigging” motion to attract game fish.

Now that you know the different types of fishing spoons and their primary uses try them out for yourself.  These are relatively inexpensive compared to other tackle products and can be extremely effective if used properly.
