Assorted sized saltwater jigs
Fishing jigs are probably one of the earliest forms of lures invested by humans. A jig is very simple in theory, having a hook at one end, an eye to tie line to at the other, and a reflective weight in the center. The jigs simplicity is what makes it so effective, however.
The main technique for fishing with a jig is to drop it in the water to a particular depth where fish are known to be found and then bounce it up and down to imitate the movements of a wounded bait fish. Most species of fish find this irresistible and thus take the hook.
Although the basic concept of jigs is a simple one over the years there have been many variations shapes and sizes used depending on the type of fish, season and conditions. Umbrella jigs are popular in many circumstances. For saltwater jigging an umbrella is great for many fish like mackerel. The umbrella jig it shaped like a tree with a wire in the middle separating several jigs and rubber works, all of which have hooks in them. It looks to fish like a small school of bait and it is often possible to catch several fish at once.
Another popular type of jig is the pig-n-jig used for bass fishing. It is basically a jig attached to a plastic worm with a hook, sometimes the plastic piece is replaced by a piece of pork. Many bass fishermen swear by these lures.
Jigs are highly versatile and can be suited to almost any type of game fish. A few of our favorites are listed below.
