There are many types of fishing plugs available. These lures are part of the spoon family and are named due to there long tubular shape, similar to that of a plug. These lures are designed to be trolled or reeling through the water, and due to their design will travel at a specific depth. The reason is to attract fish the stay in certain water temperatures found a differing depths.
Plugs are shaped like tubes and have the hooks in the rear or middle and usually a bill in the front to control the depth when being pulled. You will often find that plugs have different top and bottom coloration based on the type of bait fish they are trying to imitate.
A common type of plug is crankbaits. These are commonly used for bass and other freshwater fish like walleye or pike. The name crankbait comes from the fact that they are cast and then reeled in, or “cranked” to produce the diving effect in the lure.

Plugs are best used for hard striking game fish as they do move quickly through the water. In saltwater they are favorites among bluefish and stripper anglers, and in freshwater they are often selected for bass and pike fishing.
